THE SHIPWRECKOF THE "EL BUEN CONSEJO"
|
In 1772, El Buen Consejo--(Our Lady of) The Good Council--sailed from Spain, bringing 52 Franciscan missionaries, linen, food supplies and thousands of bronze religious medallions to help convert the New World inhabitants. The ship, one of 15 in the fleet sailing for Mexico and beyond, however wrecked in the Carribean just off the coast of Anquilla, leaving the precious cargo on the sea floor, undisturbed for 225 years. (All crew members and passengers survived.) In 1986, the treasure was discovered by a local fisherman. These medallions are first generation replicas of the originals, offered for sale to help preserve and develop the site, in cooperation with Anguilla Maritime Research Ltd., and the government of Anguilla.
